BioThere have only been seven episodes of L&O:UK broadcast which means Matt's screen time has been limited to about three hours.
The son of Irish-Catholic parents who group up in Kilburn in NW London Matt sees the distinction between criminal and lawful behavior as black and white, for instance while he feels for the victims of crime he seems sincere in viewing illegals negatively even when they have been victims themselves.
Lapsed Catholic that he is, he still lit a candle for the soul of a young boy whose body had been discovered years after his death. To his partner, DS Ronnie Brooks, who had remarked on the faith of the mother, even after her child's death, Matt concluded, after admitting to lighting the candle, "once a Catholic, always a Catholic.
It's clear he's deeply affected by evidence of child abuse and he's said "I've been that kid," to his partner during one incident where he was confronted with potential evidence of the results of such abuse. He's also referred to his father as "a bastard" and reacted negatively when a mother said she hadn't been overly worried about a missing child.
He's eager to learn from his older partner and they have a solid friendship. He's told Ronnie "Thought I came to xxx for the glamor, end up spending most of my nights with you," and in another exchange Ronnie jokingly told him "watch it sunshine". In still another exchange DS Brooks asked him if he had used a metal detector as a child and he responded the kids that did so were nerds.
His handsome looks are noticed and remarked on by females, including the local prostitutes, and he can be a bit of a flirt in return. For instance when Assistant Crown Prosecutor Alisha Phillips remarked on lice in a bed he cheekily responded "Not in my mattress." Though his flirtation with her is mild Ronnie referred to her as "your mate" (in the British sense friend not partner as in US). He was severely affected when she was raped and he was the one that offered her the most personal support.
He has relatives in the vicinity of Dungannon and Cookstown in Ireland although he's referred to them as "mad" and stated "[I] don't see um much." When interrogating a young Irish prostitute, who came to London from that area, he asked "We're related you think?"
